The story of fireworks begins in 2016 when muller van severen become infatuated by enamel. Not entirely unexpected, as they have a soft spot for forgotten materials and techniques such as hammered coating, neon, polyethylene, etc. The first designs of Fireworks are presented during the Milan Design Week in 2017 and are shown by the renowned art gallery Massimo De Carlo. A number of sculptural room dividers are exhibited, each enamelled in two colors. In fact the objects are a study in verticality and non functionality: parts of the room dividers are pleated horizontally to suggest the function of a rack. The pieces are heavy and take the enamel process to the limit.

'Fireworks' is part of Muller Van Severens ongoing research around the interactions between space and the objects that occupy it. The shape of the Paravent is untarnished and essential; each reveals a meticulous quest for detailing and an elaborate and fascinating artisan process, executed by the sole remaining enamel factory in Belgium: Emaillerie Belge.

"With this project we conceive the space as a scene for the different characters. Composing explosions of colour with this ancient processing method, consisting of molten glass mounted on metal (enamel), arising into ‘fireworks’. We aim to sculpt the objects out of one single sheet of metal, in order to create the directness like the folding a paper and ignore the heaviness of the metal."
